Summer Singles Ladder Divisions

Overview
  • There are six co-ed Ladder Divisions based on USTA levels:   5.0, 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, and 2.5.
  • You challenge your opponents and play at a mutually agreed date, time, and location.
  • The regular season begins May 1st and ends on August 15th.
  • In addition to the playoffs, there will be prizes for those with the most matches in each division at end of season.
  • Cost - $27 per player (includes a T-shirt).  This is non-refundable.
Playoffs
  • There will be a season ending playoff for ALL active players that have played at least 8 matches and completed their required matches by Aug. 15th.
  • Division Semifinals and Finals will be played Saturday, September 11th.   Rain date is Sunday, September 12th.   Players need to be available all day for both dates.   No matches will be rescheduled.
  • Larger divisions will have early round playoff matches which will be scheduled between players starting on August 16th.

Challenge Ladder Rules

1. Initial Ladder Divisions will be based on USTA "NTRP" rating, previous years' results, and player requests.   The SCT Board of Directors will make final decisions on placement.   All new players in each division will be randomly sorted below returning players to determine initial placement.

2. You can only challenge players who are a certain number of positions above you in the ladder (includes crossing division lines).   This will vary based on the size of your division (see ladder for your number).   If a player moves out of this range after the challenge has been accepted (since ladder standings change constantly), match should still be played as normal.

3. You move up and down the ladder based on your results as shown in table below.
Your Winning Percentage
(after current match)
You Play Someone
Above You & Win
You Play Someone
Below You & Lose
0-49% Move Up 1 Rung Drop Down to Opponent's Rung
50-100% Move Up to Opponent's Rung Move Down 1 Rung

4. On May 1 and June 1, you will be assigned by SCT to play 2 specific players and on July 6, 1 specific player for a total of 5.   These 5 matches can be played anytime during summer (don't have to play in month assigned) but must be completed by Aug. 15th to be eligible for playoffs.

5. You can play and accept as many matches as you like throughout the season.   Players must play at least 8 matches (including the 5 SCT arranged matches) to qualify for the playoffs.

6. Throughout the summer, there will be 2 milestones. Every active player is required to play a minimum number of matches by the milestone dates.   If you miss a milestone (due to lack of play, injury, etc.), you will be marked as inactive and pulled out of the ladder.
        Milestone dates:
        •  July 5 - must have played at least 4 matches
        •  August 15 - must have played at least 8 matches

7. Inactivated players can rejoin the league by challenging anyone in the lowest quarter of their previous division. If you win the match you will be placed one rung above your opponent. If you lose, you will be placed one rung below. As a penalty, one match win (if you have any) will be removed from your previous W/L record.

8. If a player has to forfeit a match, the winner will have the match counted in their win/loss column but the person forfeiting will not.  Note#1: Neither player will be moved up or down the ladder due to a forfeit.  Note#2: Forfeiting a match will not help you meet a milestone unless you are the player receiving the win.  Note#3: Only 1 forfeit win is allowed per season per player.

9. (New Rule) Two no show/no calls will result in removal from the ladder.  If you have to cancel a scheduled match within 48 hours of the start time, please call your opponent (do not e-mail as some people do not have constant access to e-mail).  Please report any no show/no calls to the ladder director.

10. Before you can have a rematch against any player, you or the other player must play a minimum of three other challenge matches.

11. If a match is interrupted, the match must resume from that point unless the losing player agrees to default the remainder of match.

Reporting Results
  • Players to report all results online here: http://secondcitytennis.com/apps/scores.php
  • Matches will be considered played in the order the score reports are received.
  • Winner or loser can report results and you should decide at the end of each match who can report soonest.
  • Online ladder standings will be normally be updated bi-weekly (Mondays and Thursday/ Friday).
Notes:
  • Please be responsible and respectful of other players. A challenge ladder can only work if everyone involved:
    • Returns phone calls and emails promptly
    • Accepts challenges in the order they are received
    • Plays challenges in a timely manner after accepting
    • Shows up on time (or early) for matches
    • Reports scores quickly
  • If you feel a player is dodging challenges, play somebody else.   Players are only required to play the 5 SCT-assigned matches and can refuse other challenges.
  • New players can be added up until June 15th and will be inserted at the bottom rung of their ladder division
  • If a player is unhappy with initial divisional placement, you can request to be switched to a higher or lower division.   Before you can make this request, you must play at least 3 matches in your division with lopsided scores. The Director (with the approval of the SCT Board) also reserves the right to move a player, without their request, who is obviously in the wrong division.
  • Players who become injured or wish to drop out for any reason should notify the Ladder Director so they can be inactivated.
  • All matches are best two out of three sets, with a 12-point tiebreak.
  • USTA Code & Rules apply
  • Lower ranked player provides new tennis balls(however both players should have a can of new tennis balls).

  • Venus defeats Schiavone to reach semis (AP) 8 Sep 2010 | 12:39 am

Nobody can say Kim Clijsters took an easy path to her U.S. Open title last year. She played both Williams sisters. This year, she'll only play one, though this could be an even more effective version of Venus Williams than came to Flushing Meadows in 2009. Clijsters and Williams each won their quarterfinal matches Tuesday to set up a marquee semifinal -- the No.

  • Nadal, Verdasco in all-Spanish quarters (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 11:11 pm

Rafael Nadal won his 18th consecutive Grand Slam match by beating fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 Wednesday in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. The top-seeded Nadal saved all four break points he faced against Lopez and has erased all 13 he's had to deal with this year in New York.

  • Defending champ Clijsters reaches semis (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 9:48 pm

Clijsters' was anything but easy. Struggling with her serve, shaky off both arms and bothered by the wind, defending champion Kim Clijsters barely got past French Open runner-up Sam Stosur of Australia 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the quarterfinals Tuesday night. "After the match, I was like, 'How did I win this?' I didn't feel like I was playing well; Sam is a good player," Clijsters...
