Survey Results

Thank you to everyone who completed the SCT Summer Singles 2017 Pre-Season Survey that was sent out regarding the 2016 season and suggested improvements for 2017! The SCT Singles Players have spoken! Overall, members are generally happy with the league with very few items that they would like to see changed. However, as a result of the feedback we received and the need to continue to strive for improvement each and every season, we have information that we would like to share!

Feedback and Highlights:

1) Players wanted a more streamlined way to schedule matches. Therefore, based on the survey, we will continue to utilize a software application introduced in 2016 that players can add to their smartphones so that players can receive announcements from the 2017 SCT Summer Singles league more easily and increase the chances of setting up a required tennis match when it is convenient. The application has push notification features for immediate notification of when your play-off match has been scheduled or when you just received a message from a friend that they would like schedule a tennis match with you! Plus, all of your tennis friends will be in one place so no more sorting through your contacts to find the ones that you want to swing a racquet with! Players can private chat with someone or talk with a number of people in one of the chatrooms! Once you sign up for SCT Summer Singles, you will receive an invitation shortly afterward to register for the software application. It is available on both Apple and Android platforms. You are not required to sign-up for the software application. But, it will certainly make your tennis life much easier and more enjoyable!

2) For those who want to save some money, and help out the league: Two (2) Volunteer Summer Singles Scholarships will be given out again this year. Individuals who are interested in volunteering to help with The SCT Classic Tennis Tournament (June 23-25, 2017) will receive FREE entry into the 2017 SCT Summer Singles League! Your volunteer experience will be scheduled around your participation in the tournament and we are only asking you for a few hours of your time. Interested individuals will only need to provide an answer to one simple question: 1) Why do you want to volunteer to help with the 2017 SCT Classic Tennis Tournament? We are looking for the future leaders of tomorrow! You should send your answers to the Co-Director of Summer Singles and the President of SCT Ignacio Cuevas. The two (2) individuals with the best answers will receive free entry into the 2017 SCT Summer Singles League! Submissions must be received by Friday, April 14, 2017 and the winners of each of the Volunteer Scholarships will be notified by Monday, April 17, 2017.

3) The Rule Change for 2016 continues for 2017: Only 4 required matches will be assigned this year to allow players greater flexibility in finding and scheduling matches.

4) Players were fine with the length of the season. Thus, this season the SCT Summer League will run approximately the same length as last year. The season will run from May 1, 2017 to August 8, 2017.

5) Some of you wanted to move the Playoffs from Maggie Daley Courts. We are going to do our best to move the Playoffs to a location that is more centrally located. This is challenging given the demand of the various tennis courts in Chicago, but again, we will try our best! If not, we'll stick with Maggie Daley Courts which many of you were happy with.

6) 91% of the players were fine with the current rules. Thus, no new rule changes take place in 2017.

7) Sportsmanship is a concern of many of you. Thus, SCT will consult with one of our allies, the USTA, to find a resource with regard to sportsmanship that will be forwarded to the players. We suggest that every player conduct themselves in a way that represents themselves and the SCT league in the most positive light on the court. We want every player to have a fun summer playing in our league!

However, as a result of the feedback we received and the need to continue to strive for improvement each and every season, we have changes that we would like to introduce for 2016!

New for 2016!!

1)       Players wanted a more streamlined way to schedule matches. 2)       For those who want to save some money, and help out the league: Two (2) Volunteer Summer Singles Scholarships will be given out this year. Individuals who are interested in volunteering to help with The SCT Classic Tennis Tournament (Aug. 12-14, 2016) and who have an interest in becoming an SCT Board member will receive FREE entry into the 2016 SCT Summer Singles League! Your volunteer experience will be scheduled around your participation in the tournament and we are only asking you for a few hours of your time. Interested individuals will need to provide answers to two simple questions: 1) Why do you want to volunteer to help with the 2016 SCT Classic Tennis Tournament and 2) Why are you interested in becoming a member of the SCT Board? We are looking for the future leaders of tomorrow! You should send your answers to the Co-Director Ignacio Cuevas. The two (2) individuals with the best answers will receive free entry into the 2016 SCT Summer Singles League! Submissions must be received by April 15, 2016 and the winners of each of the Volunteer Scholarships will be notified by April 19, 2016. If you send in your submissions by April 6, 2016, your name will be included in the drawing for the free pair of tickets for the PowerShares QQQ Challenge Event taking place on Friday, April 8, 2016.

3)       Some of you wanted fewer Required Matches. So, Rule Change for 2016: Only 4 required matches will be assigned this year to allow players greater flexibility in finding and scheduling matches. This change will be reviewed in a program survey at a later date.

4)       Some of you wanted a longer season. So: This season the SCT Summer League will run one week longer than last season. The dates this season are May 1, 2016 to August 9, 2016.

5)       Some of you wanted healthier snacks on Playoff Day. So, healthier snacks you will get!

6)   We have clarified rules related to retirements, responsiveness to challenges, and line calls. See the Summer Singles page (link below) for all rules.

7)   Some of you wanted to move the Playoffs to Waveland Courts. We are going to do our best to reserve those courts for Playoffs. (This is challenging given the demand of the courts, but again, we will try our best!) If not, we'll stick with Grant Park - which many of you were happy with.

Overview

There will be five or six co-ed Ladder Divisions based on USTA levels: 4.5+, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, and 2.0. Here is a breakdown of the divisions and their descriptions:

2.0 This is a beginning player.

2.5 This player is learning to judge where the ball is going although court coverage is weak. This player can sustain a slow rally with other players of same ability.

3.0 This player is consistent when hitting medium pace shots, but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks control when trying for directional intent, depth, or power.

3.5 This player has achieved improved stroke dependability and direction on moderate pace shots, but still lacks depth and variety. This player exhibits more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage and is developing teamwork in doubles.

4.0 This player has dependable strokes, including directional intent, on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. This player occasionally forces errors when serving and teamwork in doubles is evident.

4.5 This player has begun to master the use of power and spins and is beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots, and is beginning to vary tactics according to opponents. This player can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve and is able to rush the net successfully.

5.0 This player has good shot anticipation and frequently has an outstanding shot or attribute around which a game may be structured. This player can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls, can put away volleys, can successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys and overhead smashes, and has good depth and spin on most second serves.

In our league, we use letters to designate the divisions. Here is how the letters correspond to the above descriptions:

Open = 4.5+

A = 4.0

B = 3.5

C = 2.5

D = 2.0 and below

You challenge your opponents and play at a mutually agreed date, time, and location.

The regular season begins May 1st and ends on August 9th.

In addition to the playoffs, there will be prizes for those with the most matches in each division at end of season.

Cost - $25 per player.  This is non-refundable.  This does NOT include your $25 AAC Annual Membership.

Playoffs

  • There will be a season ending playoff for the Top 16 active players that have played at least 8 matches and completed their required matches by  August 8th.
  • Division Semifinals and Finals will be played August 26th
  • Rain date is August 27th
  • Most divisions will have early round playoff matches which will be scheduled between players starting on August 9th.

Challenge Ladder Rules

1. Initial Ladder Divisions will be based on USTA "NTRP" rating, previous years' results, and player requests.   The SCT Board of Directors will make final decisions on placement.   All new players in each division will be randomly sorted below returning players to determine initial placement.

2. You can only challenge players who are a certain number of positions above you in the ladder (includes crossing division lines).   This will vary based on the size of your division (see ladder for your number).   If a player moves out of this range after the challenge has been accepted (since ladder standings change constantly), match should still be played as normal.

3. You move up and down the ladder based on your results as shown in table below.
Your Winning Percentage
(after current match)
You Play Someone
Above You & Win
You Play Someone
Below You & Lose
0-49%  Move Up 1 Rung  Drop Down to Opponent's Rung
50+%  Move Up to Opponent's Rung  Move Down 1 Rung

4. On May 1 you will be assigned by SCT to play 2 specific players. On June 1, 1 player. And around July 6, 1 more player for a total of 4.  These 4 matches can be played anytime during Summer (don't have to play in month assigned) but must be completed by Aug. 8th to be eligible for playoffs.

5. You can play and accept as many matches as you like throughout the season.   Players must play at least 8 matches (including the 5 SCT arranged matches) to qualify for the playoffs.

6. Throughout the summer, there will be 2 milestones. Every active player is required to play a minimum number of matches by the milestone dates.   If you miss a milestone (due to lack of play, injury, etc.), you will be marked as inactive and pulled out of the ladder.

        Milestone dates:

        •  July 4 - must have played at least 4 matches

        •  August 8 - must have played at least 8 matches

7. Inactivated players cannot rejoin the league.

8. If a player has to forfeit a match, the winner will have the match counted in their win/loss column but the person forfeiting will not.

Neither player will be moved up or down the ladder due to a forfeit.

Forfeiting a match will not help you meet a milestone unless you are the player receiving the win.

Only 1 forfeit win is allowed per season per player. Forfeits can only be reported for a no show / no call for a scheduled match.

9. Two no show/no calls will result in removal from the ladder.  If you have to cancel a scheduled match within 48 hours of the start time, please call your opponent (do not e-mail as some people do not have constant access to e-mail).  Please report any no show/no calls to the ladder director.

10. Before you can have a rematch against any player, you or the other player must play a minimum of three other challenge matches.

11. If a match is interrupted, the match must resume from that point unless the losing player agrees to default the remainder of match.

12. All matches played before the July 4 milestone, must be reported on/before July 4 to be counted toward the total of 8 matches you need.

13. If you retire during a match, you lose that match. Do not reschedule the match to finish at a later time.

14. A ball should be called out only if you can see space between the line and the ball. If you perceive your opponent to make multiple bad line calls, email the league directors. If any one player receives three complaints against them, they will be removed from the league.

15. Because required matches are required, you are required to respond to your opponent if they contact you to set up the match. If your opponent does not respond to you after three contact attempts, email the league directors. If the league directors receive two complaints about you for this, you will be removed from the league.

Reporting Results

  • Players to report all results online.  Link will be available under the "Summer Singles" menu above once you have logged in. If you cannot see the Ladder or Score Reporting, you will need to login to the website, or register if you have not done so.

  • New players can be added up until June 1st and will be inserted at the bottom rung of their ladder division
  • If a player is unhappy with initial divisional placement, you can request to be switched to a higher or lower division.  Before you can make this request, you must play at least 3 matches in your division with lopsided scores. The Directors also reserve the right to move a player, without their request, who is obviously in the wrong division.
  • Players who become injured or wish to drop out for any reason should notify the Ladder Director so they can be inactivated.
  • All matches are best two out of three sets, with a 12-point tiebreak.
